FORMENTERA – PILAR DE LA MOLA – BAR CAN TONI
10 Jul 2018
BAR CAN TONI – THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE REAL FORMENTERA
This place is located in the small village of El Pilar de la Mola, almost opposite the hippie market (which is open on Wednesday and Sundays) and is run by an Italian (like many other places on the island).
They serve food all day.
Bar Can Toni actually the heart and soul of Formentera. This is where the locals go to eat, drink, chat, play and watch great live flamenco music and dance.
The place is really friendly and ideal for a drink and to eat a few tapas. The tapas are not spectacular but it’s not really the food you come here for. An example of…

Early coffee at the 17th Century plaza opposite the village church here in Sant Francesc Xavier (San Francisco Javier)
Then some shopping for souvenirs, a cup and a shirt
and then lunch at my favourite place on the island Can Simonet
Melt in your mouth gnocchi with salmon in a cream sauce
and then a salad with cheese, grapes, peppers and tomatoes
Followed by chocolate cake and coffee and watermelon…………..

FORMENTERA – SANT FERRÁN DE SES ROQUES
2 Aug 2017
This is the scene in Sant Ferrán de ses Roques (San Fernando) one of four villages on this island.
The hippie market plays out along the walkway with artists selling crafts. At one end you have the legendary Fonda Pepe, which is were we usually end up
Calle Mayor 55, Sant Ferrán de ses Roques, 07871 Formentera

This is the heart and soul of the island. There is usually music just yards away most nights and a market of artisans some of whom we know well and were at the Fonda where I first discovered it back in 1973.
This is where the hippies, including me, hung out in the early seventies and no…
FORMENTERA – PILAR DE LA MOLA – PLATJA MIGJORN – LA FRAGATA
21 Jun 2017
I walked into La Fragata (which was founded by Mari y Juan in 1979), the restaurant just down the beach from me and the waiters immediately grabbed my hand and hailed me because they remembered me from last year.
The owner came out and declared “Jon Listen ” the man from California ……… It was close enough and I felt like frigging Ernest Hemingway………
I have been craving fish, especially the dorada (gilthead sea bream) and fish is what they have.
Certain fish are priced by the kg so be careful when you order.
Here is a menu/price list
The place wasn’t open for another hour and I said no problem I am going…
FORMENTERA – PLATJA MIGJORN – RESTAURANTE PELAYO
17 Jun 2017
This is the place to go for a Sunday lunch with friends and family. It is an rustic, unpretentious beach side bar and restaurant built in the true soul of Formentera. Good food in a pretty location right on the beach and filled with almost only local people and a chilled easy ambience.
They serve very good fish, octopus etc but, it is the paella on Sunday everyone goes for, served with an insane quantity of seafood!
Turn off at the Tortuga restaurant (which is at Carretera La Mola, Km 6.5) and head towards the coast of Platja Migjorn, where you will find yourself on a dirt road overlooking fields of wheat once brough…
PORTUGAL – PORTO – MATOSINHOS – RESTAURANTE O LUSITANO

RESTAURANTE O LUSITANO
I am writing this because I promised the woman who presides over this place I would. A few weeks ago according to my Portuguese sources she asked about it and so if I thought if I ever wanted to go back again I had better do it, so I did!
There is a special restaurant I would like to tell you about in Matosinhos, Porto, near the water and the fish market. On this street with the beaches a stones throw away restaurant after fish restaurant greet you but this is my place to go…
I have fond memories here of both eating o…
PORTUGAL – PORTO – GANDRE – RESTAURANTE FLÔR DO BALDO

A Food experience across the border in Porto, Portugal by Jonathon Lipsin
RESTAURANTE FLÔR DO BALDO
Today I was taken by my friends here in Porto, Portugal to a working man’s restaurant seemingly in the middle of nowhere. It is by a river with big trees not unlike those in California looming outside the windows of a industrial style, huge dining room, There is wood fired oven and long banquet type tables all with dishes set upside down as is the custom here.
True enough, clumps of working people huddled down at disparate distances in the dining room over mysterious bowls and plates of steaming food.
A basket of homemad…
IBIZA – EIVISSA (IBIZA TOWN) – COMIDAS BAR SAN JUAN
7 Sep 2016
COMIDAS BAR SAN JUAN
The owners of this unpretentious tapas bar remain impervious to Ibiza’s trendiness, refusing to change its wood-panelled decor and traditional Spanish menu. It seems to have barely changed its prices either and is one of the cheapest places to eat in Eivissa (Ibiza Town).
Serving classic dishes like whole fried fish (dorada, murluza, bacalao etc), calamari and paella. No reservations are accepted and be aware you will be sharing your table with others in the traditional workers way.
Jonathon Lipsin was there today 23/7/2016

FORMENTERA – SANT FERRAN DE SES ROQUES – CAN FORN
3 Sep 2016
RESTAURANTE CAN FORN
In the village of Sant Ferran de Ses Roques (San Fernando) on the Island of Formentera, somewhere in the Mediterranean, north of north Africa and east of Spain.
I wanted to take my friend Bernadette Mundy out for a pre birthday dinner and I followed my nose to Restaurante Can Forn in the village of Sant Ferran de Ses Roques (San Fernando) where I met Bernadette in the Fonda Pepe bar back in 1973 as a young hippie. You can read that story on my website at www.jonathondlipsin.com under the Blues Woman of Appenzell.
Tonight though I was hungry and I managed to score a table without a reservation becau…
FORMENTERA – ES CALÓ – RESTAURANTE S’EUFABI
20 Aug 2016
When one is under a full moon in Aquarius and the internet healers all warn you of a major shift about to happen in your life and you are on an island in the Mediterranean somewhere off Spain and north of North Africa you have two choices as always.
One is to hide in your casa until the prevailing cosmic forces subside and shiver in fear and the other way is say the hell with it and to dive into the sea in a strong tide with great waves and let the water take you.
Then you pick yourself up from the sea with it’s frenzy and you search for the best wild paella you can find !!!.
In this case the paella…
