Eating my way around the world one country at a time..
I have adventured around the world and one does not do it on an empty stomach although in my distant hippie past there were those times.
One of the reasons i travel is food. I celebrate food and love to discover something i never had before and that is served along with a foreign culture. Nothing beats that.
Here are some of my favorites around the globe that i have indulged in.
B’tayavon Good appetite as we say in Israel..
.PARIS with wonderful cafe au lait and crusty croissants in a cafe like Les Deux Magots or Cafe Flore in St Germain des Pres with great people watching
In SWITZERLAND i love a Rostii a close cousin to our hash browns but never shredded. There is a place over 5,000 ft in the Alps (I have hiked this ) above Appenzell that serves one of the best. It is called Wildkirchli— a chapel in a grotto that was inhabited by hermits from the mid-17th to the mid-19th centuries. Paleolithic artifacts discovered here at the turn of the 20th century indicate that it is the oldest prehistoric settlement found in Switzerland so far.
NEW MEXICO with breakfast egg burritos loaded with potatoes and salsa and green chile from the town of Hatch. The best place for this is where it originated in the 50’s and that is Tia Sophia in Santa Fe which is where the picture of me is taken.
i stopped into Hatch New Mexico for their fine chiles.
Whenever i cook a breakfast burrito i only do it with Hatch chiles. To do otherwise would be considered a sin among the world..an abomination .
Only Hatch chiles will do.
The town is famous for their roasted chiles
.Here i am eating Huevos rancheros at a Hatch diner for the cost of 6 dollars …
ISRAEL with it’s shakshuka and salads ,Shakshuka is an egg dish with the eggs poached in a spicy tomato sauce .I man this for guests .Best scooped up with day old challah…. or a pita..Actually Israel has many great breakfasts like hummus and pita from one of the Yemenite restaurants in that quarter next to the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv ….
MONTREAL with the famous Mishmash (eggs scrambled with peppers, onions and salami)at Beauty’s a place that dates to my father’s time …Also is a Montreal bagel with a schemer of cream cheese and a slab of lox or smoked salmon garnished with slivers of red onion.
and then is NEW ORLEANS with beignets and chicory coffee at Cafe de Monde.
This has been served there for 150 years and i first had it in 1971 as hitch hiking hippie at 3 am.Hooked since.
In AUSTIN TEXAS i go for Migas which are scrambled eggs, crisp corn tortilla strips, green chiles, avocado, pico de gallo and shredded cheese. Served with tomatillo sauce on your choice of tortilla. Best had at Torchies restaurant.
In SPAIN i like to have a Spanish tortilla made of potatoes and eggs .
For PASSOVER i always make my Matzoh Brie which is traditional Jewish dish.I jazz it up a notch by adding scoops of cream cheese and dripping maple syrup over it.Amazing!!!!
When i am at home here in California i have many breakfasts depending on mood,

Jerusalem pita grilled with cheese and green onions
