The Story Behind the Photo

This is a very important photo. After a couple of months on the island in Formentera in 1973 my girlfriend and i finally figured out how to get off the island from the beach we were living on hand to mouth as hippies often did and we landed in Ibiza where i got a pension room .We had vague plans to head to Morocco for the winter and live in caves we had heard about on the hippie circuit.
I went down to get a copy of the first English newspaper i would have seen in 2 months to see how the world was and this photo was taken by my girlfriend Star who shot it from the upstairs window of the 3 dollar a night hotel
.I then walked to the corner near the old city of Ibiza and bought the Herald Tribune. I opened the paper and stood in the street in shock.
It was October 1973 and Israel was attacked on Yom Kippur that day by 7 Arab armies and it didn’t look good.
The Jewish state was in peril. An electric shock went through me and all my Jewish roots and Zionist upbringing that had been obscured by the globalist hippie life shone forth.
I knew what i had to do.
I ran up the stairs of that old hotel and told my girlfriend of a couple of years i was flying immediately to Israel to volunteer in the war.
She was shocked.I said simply
,”Because i am a Jew”
That was the first time i ever said that. I was resolute.
She reluctantly agreed to go with me ,this brave hippie California girl with her long hair and long skirts. We managed to land in Barcelona after an overnight boat and then we flew to Rome and then to Israel arriving to a country blacked out with war planes and sonic booms overhead and sounds of war and a country in a state of shock. Leonard Cohen also flew in that day from Hydra in Greece.

Some people i met henceforth never came back because they met their fate in battle.
6,000 Israelis were killed within 2 weeks. Golda had her finger on the bomb .

Israel was on the edge of going down.
I left two months later after fragile peace returned to the land and i was barely aware how my life was to change drastically f

3 years after this picture i cut my hair and entered the music business earning gold and platinum records in my twenties.
9 years after this picture i left the music business and joined the Israeli army making Aliya and immigrated to Israel leaving all behind.. .I then left Israel after the army and started my 30 year business Incredible Records first in Canada and then in California .
4 years ago i returned to this island and have lived here every summer since…
